Most employers are inundated with information advertising cheap criminal background checks that can be purchased from a variety of providers in order to verify that an individual can safely carry out the duties of a specific job. As is always the case, many such employers are weary of the results such companies pay produce, concerned that with the lower price may come information that is less accurate as well. This, however, is often not the case, and understanding the way that background check companies acquire their information can help shed some light on whether or not a cheap criminal background check is a good one.
There are many different databases that a company can choose to pay to receive information from or can choose to ignore. Some, however, are far more important than others. Many such databases are managed by private firms that seek out the information and compile them into less detailed, less helpful lists which companies can pay a small fee to have access to. These databases provide far less information than do other lists, such as those operated by the federal government.
In fact, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is utilized by many of the more reputable background check firms and provides much more accurate and complete information. Other companies may use other well-known databases like the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) for their data and can see equally informative and rounded results as well.
Most employers should want to have one of these databases or a similar registry included in any background check they pay for. Unfortunately, few employers understand that they can actually ask companies which databases they have access to and make their decision on who to buy from after taking this information into consideration. For example, a more expensive company may offer a background check that does not access either the NCIS or NCIC databases. Yet some cheap criminal background checks might, and if so they are far better choices than are the more expensive, less thorough checks.
It is very important that employers do a little homework when it comes to ordering such important checks. A company that takes your money without providing adequate research can put your company in a dangerous situation in which a criminal gains employment and wreaks havoc on your business. To avoid this, look into the companies providing expensive and cheap criminal background checks alike and find out which ones access the databases that you want information from.
